Powers to “clawback” funding from unis that fail to meet their targets for recruiting Scottish undergraduates.
Stormont just bails out UU here to the tune of £170m, while denying Derry a proper uni for 60+ years.
Good old Stormont!
And they all oppose independent oversight!
Holyrood plans to toughen up its university oversight powers after Dundee posted a £30m deficit.
Meanwhile here, UU ran up a £160m debt on its unnecessary new campus but opposes independent scrutiny.
Why is NI the only part of these islands without proper university oversight?
@derry_group@Garbhan_D In this context the Oireachtas including any Seanadóirí nua may have an opportunity to see beyond the recently heralded narrow Six County anti-NW higher education plans
Happy birthday & best wishes in retirement to the legend that is Mick Lynch!
As @RMTunion General Secretary, he’s been bold, principled & inspiring — a true champion for his members & the working class.
Mick’s leadership strengthened the union movement & he’ll be sorely missed.
Questions must be asked about the DUP’s influence over an independent university.
@NigelDoddsDUP was the MP who championed @UlsterUni’s unnecessary North Belfast campus.
@DianeDoddsMLA stepped in with £126m to stop it going bankrupt.
Gregory is now telling students what to wear.
Seeing Mick Lynch dismantle politicians (and journalists it has to be said) for talking nonsense was a thing of beauty.
I wish there were more people like him in public life who cut through the bullshit and spin that dominates the political/media landscape.
Happy retirement.
Under Mick Lynch’s leadership, the @RMTunion has secured phenomenal victories for its members and been a strong ally of working class communities both on and off the railways.
His retirement is a great loss to our movement but his contributions cannot be overstated. Solidarity! ✊
Sorry to see Mick standing down but completely understand. Mick has served his union & our movement for decades & deserves a long and happy retirement. Thank you Mick for being the articulate voice of trade unionism & socialism, often lifting all our spirits in some tough times.
NEW: @RMTunion General Secretary Mick Lynch is set to retire at the age of 63.
Bold, principled & assertive. He represents the very best of the labour movement. During the racist riots last year, he was mobilising members to defend mosques. That solidarity will not be forgotten.
Thank you Mick for your inspired leadership of the RMT, and for your recognition of James Connolly!
Well done for having the courage to speak out about Palestine.
I will forever treasure our time together on picket lines, and have no doubt that our paths will cross again.
Our full response to the Magee Expansion report (as informed by the @RIAdawson reports of 2021 & 2024) has been sent to the members of @NIAEconomy and is available here:

Joe McLaughlin (Pennywise) was a cornerstone of the Rath Mor Centre - its first tenant and a loyal supporter of community enterprise for more than 30 years. He was a lovely man and will be badly missed. Ar dheis Dé go raibh sé.
