PDA is a complex autism spectrum condition, best described as an anxiety based need to be in control. Children with PDA are often highly skilled at avoiding demands and masking their difficulties, and they can behave very differently from one setting to the next. This can make it genuinely difficult for staff to understand what they are seeing, and even harder to know how to respond.

What makes PDA particularly challenging is that individuals often do not respond well to traditional autism strategies. Approaches that work for many autistic children can actually increase anxiety for a child with PDA. Instead, a far more flexible approach is needed, one that lowers anxiety and allows the child to feel a sense of control.

Our Supporting Children and Young People who have Pathological Demand Avoidance course is designed to help staff understand what PDA is, why anxiety drives the behaviour, and the practical strategies that genuinely help.

The training supports staff to understand the meaning of PDA and how it presents, recognise the impact it has on a child and how they can be supported, apply the key principles of positive behaviour management for those with PDA, and reduce the impact PDA can have on learning and social opportunities.

Sometimes we hear something that stays with us. A reminder of why the right training matters so much and how far its impact can reach.

We received this message following one of our training sessions. The person who attended described it as moving, inspirational and fresh, which meant a great deal to hear.

But it was what happened next that truly stayed with us…

She shared the approach with a friend who works in an ASC resource base, who had been struggling to reach and make progress with a little girl since September. The very next day, her friend tried that same approach in her own setting.

The results were remarkable.

The little girl sat down on a chair for the first time. That morning, she was able to stay seated for up to eighteen minutes.

For a child who had found this so difficult for so long, this was a significant moment. And it happened because one person took what they learned in training and carried it straight into practice.

This is what we hope for with every course we deliver. Not just knowledge shared in a session, but real understanding that travels into settings and makes a genuine difference to the children who need it most.

It is a question we hear a lot. Sensory Circuits are talked about widely, but many staff are unsure exactly what they involve or whether they are right for the children in their setting.

Here is what they are, and how they help…

Some children arrive at school already overwhelmed. Before the day has even begun, they are unsettled, unable to sit still or struggling to focus, and that first part of the morning sets the tone for everything that follows.

The reality is simple. A child who is not regulated cannot fully access learning. Before we can expect a child to engage, sit and concentrate, they often need support to feel calm, organised and ready.

This is exactly what Sensory Circuits are designed to do.

A Sensory Circuit is a short sequence of physical activities, usually around ten to fifteen minutes, that helps children regulate and prepare for the day ahead. It moves through three stages:

👉 Alerting activities to wake up the body and brain

👉 Organising activities to challenge balance, coordination and focus

👉 Calming activities to help the child settle and feel ready to learn

Built into the start of the day, this simple routine can make a meaningful difference to how a child feels, behaves and engages, not just in the moment but throughout the hours that follow.

Our Sensory Circuits course is one of our most popular and most requested courses, and it is easy to see why. It gives staff a practical, manageable approach they can put into place straight away, with no specialist equipment or hours of planning required.

It is one of the most frustrating experiences in schools.

Staff are committed, consistent and genuinely care about the children they support. Training has been completed. Strategies have been tried. And yet the same patterns keep resurfacing.

When this happens it can feel demoralising. Leaders question whether the training was effective, staff begin to doubt themselves and children continue to experience the same difficulties.

But in most cases this is not a reflection of effort. It is a sign that something in the understanding of the child's needs is missing.

Behaviour is rarely the full picture. It is often a response to something the child is finding difficult to process, regulate or communicate. When that root cause is not fully understood, responses remain reactive rather than proactive. Different staff handle the same situation differently, which creates inconsistency that can actually increase the difficulty for the child.

Over time this pattern becomes harder to break.

When staff have a deeper understanding of what is driving a child's behaviour, the whole approach shifts. Responses become more consistent, children feel more predictable support around them and the same challenges begin to appear less frequently.
