The great Ernie O'Malley was born on this date.
As a memorist of the revolution, he was second to none. John McGahern described 'On Another Man's Wound' as "the one classic work to have emerged" from it all. A fascinating life.
@timelesscolours This really is a fascinating photo and so rare to see Pearse otherwise than posed. His facial pose reminds me of the distinctive look of Ardal and indeed Rory OโHanlon
The Pearse Brothers
In conversation before the Easter Rising. Teacher, poet and revolutionary leader Patrick Pearse stood alongside his younger brother Willie, an artist and sculptor trained under Oliver Sheppard.
Both would be executed at Kilmainham Gaol in May 1916.
@erskinechilders Must check that out. He is an interesting character with the Quaker background etc. Obv 1916 played a big part but interesting how he was so marginalised post independence
@erskinechilders Virtually all of the key players from 1913 were long dead . It strongly suggests that it is not just a public position. Also possibly that he thinks MacNeill had been hard done by. If the private public analysis from earlier years is true, possibly also some guilt
@erskinechilders I saw that public private point but itโs not imho convincing. It may, or may not, have been true in 1913 but people tend to be honest in later life. In this case MacNeill had been dead for more than 20. Years Why would Hobson be so effusive in his praise here?
