long thread on poem translation ๐
thought this would be interesting for those of you curious about how translating works on the back end!
all mistakes my own etc, other tlers feel free to chime in ๐ซถ
tada! finally a draft iโm happy with~
this kind of iterative work happens in all translations because interpretation is a personal process. once meaning is rendered, the rest is an art, not science - there could be ten other versions, all equally valid & objectively correct ๐
brainstorming stage!! usually it just looks like this without the specific thoughts typed out; depending on the poem there could be 3-5 versions i pick from at the end.
note: this is a simpler poem (taught to second graders actually) so a simpler, sing-song sound is appropriate.
Underrated benefit of reading a great number & variety of books is that it will make you a more interesting person. As C. S. Lewis said, the person who doesn't read lives in a tiny world; reading lends us the perspective of a thousand lives.
