Rivers of Pune

•Pune has five rivers, they merge into one called the Mula-Mutha. They want to build a road along the river bank on the river bed. Archimedes Principle:. In case the River gets choked Pune will drown.

•All these rivers have been dammed upstream.
•These dams supply Pune with its drinking and industrial water needs.
•Roughly 2000 MLD of water is consumed in Pune’s 2 municipalities & 3 cantonments occupying 519 sq kms.

•80% of this or about 1632 MLD of raw as well as treated sewage is generated.
•All of this is released into the Mula-Mutha river and its tributaries there is no flow of clean water – only sewage, mostly un-treated as per CPCB norms. It goes and sits in Pune’s septic tank or the Ujani dam which is based along the run of the river over 100 kms further south.
•The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has paid fines of over 384 crore for polluting its rivers. Nothings been done to repurpose the sewage being generated in-situ, that’s what the water act 1974 insists upon. No sewage should be released into any natural water source, lake, stream or river body.
•These river banks are bound by thick riparian forests & fresh water natural springs. These forests and streams are the river’s natural resilience or natural ability to being itself back to life.
•JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) has come forward with
over Rs 1800 crore since 2016 to resolve Pune’s sewage crises- not implemented.
•Instead of treating the sewage, PMC is building a Riverfront Development Project. The best way to treat this sewage is through bioremediation. It will cost 10-20% of the current JICA Project or 180 crores.
•They are slaughtering/burying the riparian forests and concretising the riverbank. Very Bad idea. Remember, if we choke the mula mutha, the city drowns.
•Over 1545 acres of land is being stolen from the riparian banks. It’s a land grab of epic proportions.
•2.5 crore tons of concrete and 5.5 crore tons of debris will be dumped into the river.
•The temperature rise, heat island impacts and pluvial fluvial flood circumstances due to Climate change haven’t been taken into account.
•Already this year, Pune rained from May onwards (350 mm in May alone), until October and summer temperatures were 7-8 degrees Celsius above normal.

Alternatives:

•River front development projects in the manner it is planned should be scrapped.
•Reports have been submitted to the PMC for purifying the rivers ecologically by various institutions - https://t.co/IEPTyemRGI; https://t.co/xfpZblSvbL; https://t.co/mwheck5ZH7.

•A city wide analysis based on carrying capacities and whole systems thinking should be commissioned.

We can’t have unlimited building, unlimited road, unlimited parking, unlimited transportation, unlimited infrastructure this mindset will lead only to unlimited traffic, unlimited garbage & unlimited pollution. Delhi has already found uranium in its drinking water. They cannot breathe over there. Are we going to do that to ourselves too. Wake up Pune, hold your system to account.
