Why wud a psych survivor want to join together to advocate for change in the MH system?
Definitely join together but why not to LEAVE the MH system behind? To build non-transactional connection&community, holding space for each other keeping each other healthy&whole in friendship
“Michael B First1, who is an editor of the DSM-IV & DSM-V (the manual psychiatrists use to diagnose mental illnesses), has stated (in the Book of Woe by Gary Greenberg) that “these categories exist to facilitate clinician communication but have no firm basis in reality”.”

The foundations of psychiatry are the observation of behaviors of individuals that bring discomfort to those around them.
Psychiatry is the pursuit of eradicating traits you dislike in others, while deluding the world that you're doing it to help them.

Helping the suffering of society’s deviants w behavioral therapy, electroconvulsive shocks&sedative drugs is far different from accommodating everyone’s uniqueness! One is control & force the other is acceptance & liberation.
Thats Psychiatry versus anti-psychiatry in a nutshell
@tylerblack32@NickTaber morality & social control isnt a defence of psychiatry. Its a ludicrous, & quite frankly, insulting denial of your own history & position in the world. You can't just shout "antipsychiatry" & then run away from confronting these facts. If we have to live with them, so do you. 9/9
@tylerblack32@NickTaber emotional response; when does distress become disorder? Which beliefs are delusional? What is a regular situation & what is one which can be described as potentially traumatic? What constitutes "normal" behaviour? Those are not purely 'scientific' questions. They are moral, 7/
@tylerblack32@NickTaber sentences for those who attempt suicide too publicly - criminalising people for not being "better behaved". Psychiatry's history is *inseparable* from social & moral control.. & these questions haven't disappeared. Psychiatry is still asked to decide what counts as a normal 6/
@tylerblack32@NickTaber as hysterical, with the personality disorder diagnosis. It STILL disproportionately detains Black people. It STILL disproportionately pathologises LGBTQ people - particularly trans people. It STILL uses punitive responses to self-harm & suicidality, even supporting custodial 5/
@tylerblack32@NickTaber comas in attempts to make them "normal". They weaponised diagnoses like schizophrenia to neutralise civil rights leaders, locking away Black men who protested too loudly. Psychiatry STILL refuses to acknowledge the scale & impact of CSA & sexual violence. It STILL labels women 4/
@tylerblack32@NickTaber of modern medicine. They detained & tortured traumatised & "wilful" women at the whim of their abusive husbands & fathers. They sterilised people with learning disabilities. They pathologised gay men & lesbians & subjected them to chemical castration, electric shocks & insulin 3/
@tylerblack32@NickTaber some of the first architects of the holocaust. Long before the death camps, psychiatrists were identifying, categorising & facilitating the murder of disabled & psychiatric patients. Psychiatrists are responsible for some of the most devastating abuses carried out in the name 2/
@tylerblack32@NickTaber Seriously? "That's not true at all" is an astonishing response from a psychiatrist. If psychiatrists refuse to acknowledge the foundations of their own field, we're all fucked.
Psychiatry is not some innocent bystander occasionally led astray by society. Psychiatrists were 1/
@DrMcFillin@DuthieAlyne From 1984-2022, I got every single one of my 3-6 cocktails of psych meds prescriptions from a psychiatrists—in 20 minute visits. My PCP 10 minute visits then sent me to GI, cardiac, urology,
Ortho…to prescribe in 20 minute visits —for the side effects of the psych meds.
@KCeplechaUlrich@DrMcFillin Run out bc everybody will wise up & stop voluntarily taking toxic pills?
What do you think mental health laws are for????
Instead of encouraging pple to go to a psychiatrist to get off psych meds why not educate ur patients that we all must do the job we are paid for to keep our job. A psychiatrist will do his job—his job is to prescribe. WTF are you thinking?
Oh!—ur trying to keep YOUR job, right?
@DrMcFillin You’re right. And it’s getting worse. Somehow, I’m responsible for treating “symptoms” that are actually medication side effects. I encourage clients to discuss these effects with their to prescribers, but they usually come back with additional prescriptions.

For those like myself.. working as a clinical psychologist during this dark era of mass prescribing psychiatric drugs… its impossible to discern if a persons struggles are related to any episode/pathology vs the effects of the drugs they are prescribed. I am proud that I, at the very least, inform them of that. Others keep providing diagnosis after diagnosis- leading to higher doses and new prescriptions. All the time believing its their “mental illness”
@BartAndrews@senatorshoshana I am—Logic games are fun!
What’s not fun is having the lived experience of voluntarily seeking help in a psych ward, then being tied up&injected w Thorazine for politely saying no ty to a med that previously induced akathisia bc my anecdote=delusion &empirical evidence=TRUTH!
We teach police put criminals in jail—so we know to avoid them!
MHPros advertise “HELP” when we feel/behave in ways considered “abnormal”
If they advertised the whole truth “We coerce/force if unable/unwilling to comply to social norms”
We wud know to avoid the [social] police!
@NickTaber “bc of all the power OUR society gives them.”
If the collective gives shrinks power to coerce compliance to societal norms then WE don’t want society’s members to break societal norms just as WE give police coercive powers to enforce laws.
WE use shrinks for norms—police for laws
