In my DeFi explanation series, I learnt something I’ve been finding difficult to understand for a long time, and I’m glad I finally understand it properly now.

I won’t gatekeep, don’t worry..

Before I tell you what it is, I have a story.

Five bored tech-savvy friends already had a stable source of income. Safe to say they were doing well for themselves.

But yunno…a wealthy man is rarely satisfied with his wealth. So they decided to look for another source of income. Fortunately, they found one.

They all got the same job.

And this was what the job entailed…

All they needed to do was put their PCs to work while they earned money.

Their PCs had to confirm valid transactions happening on a blockchain, solve a puzzle, and get rewarded. Simple.

But there was a catch…

Whichever PC solved the puzzle first got rewarded. The others got nothing.

Safe to say the job became a competition because every PC had to compete to solve the puzzle first.

Don’t worry…there was no beef between them
They were still cool.

That was my little sister’s reaction after I told her how a hoodie transaction went wrong and honestly, it’s probably the simplest way to explain DeFi too

I wanted to get a hoodie I loved from an online vendor, so I made the payment.

She said she didn’t receive it.

I sent another ₦13k.

This time, she confirmed it instantly.

A few minutes later, I got debit alerts twice 😭

Both transactions actually went through.

₦13k twice??
Ahh… in this sapa economy?

I texted the vendor immediately.

Me: Hi ma’am, the money I sent went twice and I got debited twice.

Vendor: Hello, I only received one alert ma.

Me: Please refresh your app ma 😭

Vendor: I’ve refreshed it. Maybe it’ll reverse. You should visit your bank tomorrow.

I went to the bank the next day.

Their response?

“The transaction was successful.”

Meaning the money wasn’t hanging.
It had already dropped.

I texted the vendor again, but she still insisted she got only one payment.

At that point, I just locked up.

My hoodie got delivered eventually, but deep down, I knew I wasn’t buying from her again

Then I started thinking…

What if this transaction happened on DeFi instead?

What if a smart contract handled the payment?

That whole issue probably wouldn’t have happened.

Then my little sister asked:
“What exactly is a smart contract?”

And I loved that question because she asked what a lot of people are afraid to ask.
