The bottom of Lake Como is 200 meters below sea level, and the reason is that the Mediterranean Sea once evaporated almost completely.

Around 5.5 million years ago, tectonics sealed the Strait of Gibraltar. Cut off from the Atlantic, the Mediterranean dried into a salt desert more than a kilometer below today's coastlines. Geologists call it the Messinian Salinity Crisis.

With the sea gone, every river flowing south off the Alps suddenly had a kilometer of extra elevation to fall. They responded the way rivers do: by cutting. The ancestral Adda carved a gorge so deep that its floor at Argegno sits roughly 700 meters below modern sea level. A canyon to rival anything in Arizona, sliced into the southern Alps.

Then Gibraltar breached. The Atlantic roared back in what may be the largest flood in Earth's history, refilling the entire Mediterranean in a geologic instant. The drowned canyons silted up.

The ice ages finished the job. Glaciers flowing off the Alpine ice sheet bulldozed through the half-buried gorge, widened the V into a U, and dumped terminal moraines at Como and Lecco that sealed the valley shut. When the ice retreated, water filled the trench. 425 meters deep, the deepest lake in the Alps.

So the postcard you're looking at is a flooded canyon inside a flooded canyon. Carved once by a vanished sea, carved again by vanished ice, and now lined with villas because the same violence that made it left slopes too steep to build towns on.
