a month into learning basic french and i’m actually surprised by how much passive comprehension has already developed. well, i still do struggle with constructing sentences myself, but when my friend from montréal speaks french, i can somehow follow the thought ^^

and again, the novel doesn’t ask you to “forgive” erik. it just kinda show you or make you understand how a person can become monstrous without ever ceasing to be human.
reading leroux’s phantom after watching and loving the musical is interesting because the romantic tragedy is almost entirely ‘reframed’. the musical somehow invites sympathy for the phantom;
with that, i think his suffering explains his cruelty without absolving him of it, which makes his relationship with christine feel less like a “doomed romance” and more like a study of what happens when longing becomes possession…
