When neither party reflects the principles and values of conservatism, it is the duty of the conservative to speak out against both parties rather than surrender conservative values and principles to the demands of partisanship. A conservative is a conservative because he or she is committed to a set of principles and values. A conservative is a Republican because he or she is seeking to enshrine those principles and values into the motivating doctrines of a major political party with the goal of influencing policy and law to reflect conservative principles and values. A conservative who puts loyalty to the Republican Party before conservative principles and values is no longer a conservative, but a partisan hack.

This is good news. Even beyond his poor stewardship of immigration policy, it was severely beneath the professionalism that should be expected of junior members of the executive branch to publicly insult and argue with members of Congress.
