A video is circulating on X that looks like Pope Leo XIV refused to shake a Black priest’s hand and walked away. Shame!

I watched the full video from that same greeting line. That cropped video was intentionally done to steer controversy. The video left out what happened before and why the Pope stopped.

But this is social media and we will always get the full gist.

Now, earlier in the same line the Pope shook hands with other Black people there - including priests and lay faithful. So the person in the short clip is not the reason the greetings ended.

At the moment people cut that video, an assistant told him the French prime minister was present. The Pope stopped the handshake line, turned, and went to greet the prime minister. That is the break you see. It is the official being brought in, not a rejection of the priest standing there.

If you only watch the last seconds, it can look like a snub. The full tape shows a line of greetings that was already mixed, then interrupted for protocol.
