You’ve missed my point. I’m describing the mechanism by which fringe ideas (which are fine to have and propose) can go unchallenged in more mainstream institutions because people in them find it emotionally taxing to go against a committed minority. In short, the dysfunction isn’t that too many people hold fringe beliefs on police, gender, borders etc, it’s that too many people who don’t agree remain quiet thus giving impression more people hold those opinions than actually do. This undermines centre left, empowers the right, and I think ultimately backfires for radical left: hence dysfunctional.
