As I received this news today here in British Columbia, the wildfire smoke blankets the sky, our eyes are burning and our kid is complaining of a sore throat from it. And we’re the lucky ones. Over the weekend, more than 5,000 British Columbians had to flee their homes in 24 hours, under evacuation from just two of the approximately 130 wildfires currently engulfing the province.

What is our government doing? This project defies common sense - this is corporate welfare on a surreal scale, giving a gift to an industry making $90 billion in excess profits this year, and which still refuses to pay for its own infrastructure. It makes a mockery of the duty to consult First Nations, guaranteed under our constitution. You can’t approve a project and then engage in consultation: that is just a pipeline to the courts.

And for Canadians across this land, it is a kick in the teeth to call this climate bomb of a project “in the national interest”. It is in Big Oil’s interest for sure. But it doesn’t do a damn thing for people struggling with the cost of food and housing, increased costs from privatized healthcare, and of course the daily anxiety of climate breakdown.

The rest of the world is racing ahead on renewable energy, leaving Canada behind. Instead of spending at least $50 billion of public money on fueling more climate chaos, Canadians deserve a government that invests in building the green economy of tomorrow – creating good jobs, lowering costs, and protecting our future.

During a World Report segment, CBC referred to Palestinian land in the West Bank as "disputed territory."

CJPME’s Media Accountability Project (MAP) challenged this, emphasizing that "disputed territory" misrepresents international law, ICJ decisions, and Canadian foreign policy, which recognize the land as illegally occupied.

After initial pushback and an escalation to the CBC Ombud, CBC reconsidered and broadcast a nationwide correction:

"On July 27, World Report ran a story about violence in the occupied West Bank. At one point, it was incorrectly referred to as disputed territory. It should have been referred to as occupied territory."

« Retourne dans ton pays » : le racisme assumé d’un policier de Mercier

Une vidéo circule présentement en ligne dans laquelle on peut voir un policier de la Ville de Mercier dire à un homme noir que, s’il n’aime pas le Canada, il peut retourner dans son pays. Le policier savait qu’il était filmé et a tout de même fait ce commentaire. Il s’agit de racisme ouvert, exprimé avec fierté devant une caméra.

Un ancien policier du SPVM, qui a commenté l’affaire dans les médias, a déclaré : « Le policier sait qu’il est filmé. Il aurait dû savoir que tout ce qu’il dirait pourrait revenir contre lui. Il se tire dans le pied en disant ça. » Un autre policier du Grand Montréal a affirmé : « C’est limite raciste de dire ça. Au pire, tu peux le penser, mais ne va pas dire des choses de même, c’est inacceptable. »

Premièrement, ce commentaire n’est pas « limite raciste » : il est carrément raciste. Ensuite, affirmer qu’il serait acceptable de le penser, mais pas de le dire, démontre à quel point certains policiers sont déconnectés de la réalité et des attentes que la population entretient envers eux.

Dire qu’il est légitime de le penser revient à dire qu’il serait acceptable de tenir ce genre de propos dans les voitures de patrouille, dans les vestiaires, autour d’une bière après le travail ou ailleurs, à l’abri des regards. Cela démontre que la culture du racisme au sein des services de police dépasse largement le cas du PDQ 39 à Montréal-Nord et que nous sommes devant un enjeu systémique.

Le Parti Vert du Québec réitère sa demande pour la tenue d’une enquête publique sur le racisme au sein des services de police partout au Québec.

Pour le bien de la société et afin de maintenir le lien de confiance entre la population et les forces de l’ordre, la tolérance zéro doit s’appliquer à tous les comportements racistes, qu’ils soient exprimés devant les citoyens ou entre policiers, à l’abri des regards. Dans les deux cas, ils sont inacceptables.

Canada cannot remain silent as the United States openly threatens to “dismantle” the ICC “brick by brick”, a fundamental institution of international law.

The ICC does not “override” the US, as Rubio false claims, but holds its officials accountable for war crimes committed in the territory of state parties.

This is a transparent effort to shut down investigations into criminal probes against Israeli officials for their crimes in Gaza, and to prevent the US from being held accountable for crimes against the people of Venezuela, Iran, Afghanistan, and elsewhere.

This is a direct attack on everything that Canada claims to stand for. When will @MarkJCarney take a stand?
