The sudden deployment of a US naval attack group toward the coast of Venezuela is raising fears of an expensive new military conflict in Latin America.

The legal cover for the tasking of the seven warships, surveillance aircraft, 2200 Marines and a nuclear attack submarine is an executive order in January 2025 and subsequent reclassification of eight organised crime syndicates as foreign terrorist organisations for the first time.

In May 2025 Secretary of State Marco Rubio was concurrently appointed National Security Advisor—the first time since Henry Kissinger that someone has held both roles.

The decision in early August 2025 to deploy the US military against “narco-terrorists” potentially leaves strikes by these forces outside Congressional authority.

The US expedition has galvanised opposition around the region, with the Latin American and Caribbean trading bloc ALBA-TCP issuing a communique describing the military escalation as “a direct attack on Venezuela's independence, but also a threat to the stability and self-determination of all the peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean.”

Samuel Moncada, Venezuela's ambassador to the U.N described the deployment as “a massive propaganda operation to justify what the experts call kinetic action—meaning military intervention in a country which is a sovereign and independent country....it's ridiculous to think that they're fighting drug trafficking with nuclear submarines.”

Leaked documents reveal Microsoft’s Azure cloud was used by Israel’s Unit 8200 for mass surveillance on Palestinians, recording millions of calls from Gaza and the West Bank. Sources inside the unit told +972 magazine that the data was used for arrests, blackmail, and targeted killings. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella approved the deal in 2022 after meeting with Unit 8200’s commander in Seattle. He called the project “critical,” aiming to move 70% of Israeli intelligence to Azure.

Ab August beginnen die öffentlichen Sitzungen des Corona-Untersuchungsausschusses in Thüringen. Angehört werden sollen unter anderem die Virologen Drosten, Streeck und Kekulé, der ehem. RKI-Präsident Lothar Wieler und die Nudging-Expertin Cornelia Betsch.

In der ersten öffentlichen Sitzung ist eine Einvernahme des Datenanalysten Tom Lausen als Sachverständigen geplant. Wie der Webseite zum Ausschuss zu entnehmen ist, fanden bereits drei Sitzungen statt, diese waren jedoch bislang nicht öffentlich: https://t.co/IJhMTuCQby

Die Thüringer Allgemeine beschreibt ein Spannungsfeld zwischen den Landtagsfraktionen bezüglich der Frage, was mit dem Ausschuss überhaupt beweckt werden soll:

"Während die Vertreter vor allem von CDU und BSW immer wieder deutlich gemacht hatten, dass sie aus den Erkenntnissen des Ausschusses Schlussfolgerungen für die Zukunft ziehen wollen, haben Vertreter der AfD mehrfach erklärt, aus ihrer Sicht solle der Untersuchungsausschuss auch dazu beitragen, die Verantwortlichen für angebliche Fehler im Umgang mit der Pandemie zur Rechenschaft zu ziehen."

Es dürfte also spannend werden. Ich berichte ab August neben Sachsen auch aus Thüringen.

In Deutschland ändert sich die Einstellung zum Israel-Krieg und die Politik reagiert darauf. Im ZDF-Stimmungsbarometer zeigt sich eine deutliche Veränderung der Stimmung über den Krieg in Gaza.

Germany Begins to Shift on Israel

“Harming the civilian population to such an extent, as has increasingly been the case in recent days, can no longer be justified as a fight against Hamas terrorism.”

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, in a TV interview, signaled a shift from Germany’s unwavering support for Israel. He expressed confusion over the objectives of the Israeli army’s operations in Gaza and said that he will raise these concerns directly with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The shift comes as a poll conducted by Der Tagesspiegel found that 51% of respondents oppose arms deliveries to Israel. The poll also revealed growing public support for Berlin to distance itself from Netanyahu’s government, with 44% favoring a more critical stance toward Israel—up from 33% in the summer of 2023.
