Beyond Tax Season: The Hidden Value of Your Pension Plan
As the tax filing deadline approaches, many Canadians are focused on deductions, credits, and what they owe — but it’s also a great time to step back and recognize one of the most valuable (and often overlooked) financial advantages available: membership in a registered pension plan.
Even if you’re not directly contributing from your paycheck, your employer may be making contributions on your behalf, whether through a collective agreement or as part of your compensation package. Those contributions are real money invested in your future, yet they are not treated as a taxable benefit today. Even more powerful, the investment income earned on those contributions grows tax-free while it remains in the plan. Over time, those contributions and compounded investment returns work together to build a meaningful source of retirement income.
The result? In the case of defined benefit and target benefit plans, a steady, predictable monthly pension that supports you in retirement — funded in large part by dollars that were never taxed along the way (the benefits are then being taxed to you during retirement, presumably when you are not having to pay taxes on employment income). It’s a reminder that a being a member of a registered pension plan isn’t just an annual statement that you look at for 5 minutes then file away (or worse!) — it’s one of the most tax-efficient and secure ways to build long-term financial well-being.
We are pleased to announce that Melanie Nadeau has joined Convyta Partners as a Partner. Melanie's vast experience will further strengthen our pension consulting capabilities across Canada.
