I think the reason I'm so annoyed with the fanfic writers are god's gift discourse is coz I'm pretty sure the ones bitching about engagement are writers I don't read, because the shit I read is so fucked up that the authors probably wanan remain anonymous.
When ao3 comes back up Im going to kudos and comment on every single work from authors that said they dont mind their work being downloaded and shared AND after that Im going to block every single author thats literally harassing people for literally downloading their fics
I have 1M words written on AO3 and imo it's easier to write 1M words than to write a comment coz there's genuinely no pressure to write anything good but writing comments involves thinking about writing something the author likes because u have a compulsory reader in the author.
Basic decency is acknowledging that you’re important as a person, but a fan who reads and comments their thanks is not contributing anything close to the same as a fan creating fanworks for the fandom. If you can’t acknowledge a basic difference, do you truly respect fan labour?
the year is 2039. I wake up in my AO3-sanctioned house & clock in for my fanfic writing shift. Working conditions are abysmal. I have 200k words of yaoi due by EOD. I grind to meet my fandom KPIs, working 69 hours a day. i fail, im fired. Life is bleak. If only we had unionised😔
So a lot of the "WE WANT ENGAGEMENT" sounds like y'all just want an ego stroking, because if u were genuine about the community, the community happens in fic exchanges, whumptober, discord servers, y'all just have to find ur ppl.
I will never understand the "I am lonely so engage with my fic by kudosing and commenting" discourse because I make my fandom friends through discord and my fandom friends just read 1-2 of my fics, we beta each other's shit and just play league bro.
80% of current ao3 discourse is just the "well, that's it for tonight, folks! as ever, the next chapter will appear once we reach 50 reviews on this one, so you know what to do :)!" type of fic writer being Mad but variously framed as either a labour or a copyright dispute
Can I just say, fanfic authors from pre pandemic and earlier literally Do Not Give A Fuck.™
Younger/newer authors gameify fanfics because "boohoo statistics, boohoo my kudos". Older gens know writing is for the love of the game who the FUCK cares about your stats.

It's kinda crazy how all the evidence seems to point to ao3 being taken down by a data scraping phishing scam, but fandom circles seem more concerned about people uploading epub files of their fics to their personal google drives and whether or not they're getting enough kudos.
Taking a moment to say how grateful I am as an ao3 author for the folks who take the time to read my words whether they leave kudos or comments or not. I’m thankful for each and every one of you. Comments & kudos are wonderful, but there is no price of admission to read my fics.
