FYI Penguin Classics sebenarnya punya beberapa jenis dan gaya cover untuk terbitan klasiknya, ada yang warna orange terang, hijau mint, dan lainnya. tapi seri cover hitam dipenuhi gambar seni ini termasuk seri paling populer dan digemari banyak pembaca. Seri cover hitam ini sebenarnya dipopulerkan oleh art director asal Italia bernama Germano Facetti.

Facetti fokus pada gambar-gambar yang mewakili tema, emosi, dan konflik utama pada novel seperti gambar lukisan yang sering dipajang di museum, atau gerakan seni eropa abad 15 s/d 19. Bukan tanpa alasan, Facetti menganggap bahwa cerita-cerita novel tersebut punya hubungan emosional atau tematik satu sama lain.
