Let me repeat this point for those that haven’t heard it!

The Olympic Stadium site can be salvaged as a tourism destination and repurposed to meet the actual needs of this city.

You do not need to demolish the Olympic TOWER when you demolish the STADIUM. These are separate things! The tower is part of city’s skyline. The tower is a tourist attraction. The tower has permanent tenants. It doesn’t have to go anywhere.

The stadium, on the other hand, will not get a tenant if it gets a new roof. The seating bowl cannot be fixed. It has a fatal design flaw from that era, where spectators are too far away from the playing surface (or concert stage) because it’s simply not steep enough. This is why virtually every stadium from the 70s has been demolished. Fans need to be on top of the action, not squinting with binoculars. Are we seriously going to spend billions refurbishing the interior?

You do not need to demolish the Biodôme or any of the other Olympic facilities. You don’t even need to get rid of the parking lots if it can serve a purpose in the future.

With the tower as an anchor, you could build an entire neighbourhood of housing and commercial buildings. Have you seen how much land is at this site? You could do so much here.

And then, we could focus on improving what already works and building world-class facilities with the billions saved by not throwing it down the Big O toilet. Imagine:

- A plan to secure an MLB expansion franchise with a beautiful ballpark, that could also host outdoor hockey games for the Habs
- The Alouettes playing right on the mountain, but in a Molson Stadium that has seats and cup holders and proper concessions
- CF Montreal getting the necessary upgrades for Saputo Stadium. If it remains a quasi minor-league facility, the team will be sold and moved to the U.S. This is not a joke. There are multiple markets that would throw a billion dollars to steal this team.
- Building a retractable roof at IGA Stadium for the tennis tournament. A covered centre court would make the facility shine when the weather doesn’t and might someday be required on the tour.
- A proper home for Cirque du Soleil. In the city that is behind so much art and tech, why don’t we have a place to showcase it? Are we content with our talent permanently on display in Las Vegas but not at home?
