I ran into a former student this week.
She came late to class, didn’t prioritize the coursework & didn’t maximize her potential.
She is now pre-med, owns her own condo & is still late to things.
Just because students don’t meet our expectations doesn’t mean they won’t succeed.
@jessejanderson When I took meds for the first time I could actually control my impulsive thoughts becoming verbal comments. I also wasn't as tired at the end of the day trying to stay focused from the distractions around me.
We need #stress to leap out of bed in the morning, to become happy and fulfilled, to acquire knowledge and skills, to have meaningful friendships, and to become a good person. But if we are under too much stress, all of these areas of personal growth are impeded.
Let God have you, and let God love you - and don’t be surprised if your heart begins to hear music you’ve never heard and your feet learn to dance as never before.
A little more info re the grad change. Students would take 4 credits in one of the following. The provincial courses also statisfy other grad requirements in ELA/SS so this wouldn't mean reduction in # of electives unless students choose to take the requirement as an elective.
Thank you to our own @bcsca school counsellors who work so hard every day to support our students, staff and families! Every week should be National School Counselling Week. @RichmondSD38 they are the mental health experts in your building. @mh_literacy@bcscmhcoalition
If we want to change the paradigm, we have to start #listening to a kid. And we have to listen not just to our kid, but to all kids. And we have to listen, not just to the kid, or the preteen, or the teen, but to the young adult. #SelfReg
The goal of #Self-Reg is not to float through life in the sort of “stress-free state” that one experiences in a sensory deprivation tank; the goal is to be able, not just to handle, but to thrive on and grow from our stresses.
The starting point for changing a child’s trajectory begins with our perception of that child; for this has far more bearing on how they perceive themselves than we might ever dream #SelfReg
The truth is, as an #educator, you cannot ignore a student's #emotions and how they are regulated. If a student has to make a great effort to try to remain calm, they might have little remaining energy to attend to what you are saying.

@jannarden I remember packing our family into a van with minimal seats and a mattress in the back going to Florida from Ontario. No stopping, 6 kids.
We also went from Saskatchewan to BC in a VW Bug with 6 kids but I was just born and the youngest so I don't remember but heard the stories.
