Jessie Mack Butler, 18, a star baseball player in Stillwater, OK, has been sentenced to one year of rehabilitation and community service in lieu of his initial 78-year prison sentence for the brutal rapes of two 16 y/o girls, one of whom nearly died.

Butler, who was 17 when he committed both rapes, pled guilty last week after Special Judge Susan Worthington signed off on the DA’s decision to prosecute him as a youthful offender.

This decision was made in spite of the fact that Butler choked both victims unconscious before raping them, and in spite of the video evidence found on his phone, showing him choking one of the victims.

One of the girls Butler raped required surgery to repair the damage to her neck, and was told by doctors that she had been just 30 seconds away from dying.

"You didn’t just strangle me with your hands — you strangled my voice, my joy, my ability to feel safe in my own body," she wrote in her impact statement.

Butler’s father, Mac Butler, is a former football director at Oklahoma State University, the alma mater of Payne County District Attorney Laura Thomas, who negotiated the change in Butler’s status to that of youthful offender.
