Special thanks to @kmcaulif1 for putting together this amazing #buildingvirtue workshop, to (Twitterless) Aaron Baker for his coordination and organization, to @templeton_fdn for their continual support, & to the wonderful and insightful attendees for the amazing discussions!
In our final discussion, @LianeLeeYoung led an amazing conversation with the group about our final session of talks on learning from others and virtue acquisition -- such insightful thoughts, discussions, & talks from everyone!
To start off our last session, Alex Thornton discussed his work on the evolution of teaching and its role in cumulative culture. We learned about how teaching evolves when it promotes learning of useful skills that would be otherwise hard to learn #buildingvirtue
In our final talk of today's workshop, Melissa Koenig presented work finding that children are open to surprising info from adults. Interestingly, children were more receptive when info was directly communicated compared to when it was overheard #buildingvirtue
In the second talk in our "learning from others" session, Aaron Baker discusses some fascinating ongoing work on how norm information and norm source influences children's virtuous behavior in the context of fairness and trustworthiness.
Next up is @felixwarneken who will be facilitating a discussion about all this interesting work! Stay tuned for more afternoon about this afternoon's session on how we learn virtues from others.
This morning, we continued our Building Virtue workshop with a session on virtue cultivation across diverse religious and cultural contexts. First, Jane McAuliffe spoke with us today about the concept of virtue in Islam #buildingvirtue
We finished up this morning's session on religion and culture with a wonderful talk by Frank Clooney on virtue in Hinduism--all fascinating work and discussions!
Starting off our session on capturing and explaining virtuous behavior is @DorsaAmir who discussed the development of virtuous behavior across five diverse societies
Finishing out our discussion on punishment and forgiveness was Amrisha Vaish, who shared recent work on the emergence of forgiveness in children. She discussed projects that found forgiveness is related to displays of remorse and transgressor group membership #buildingvirtue
