Illinois State is believed to be the first school ever to qualify for the Semifinals in a D1 postseason tournament in Football, MBB, and WBB in the same academic year. They lost an overtime heartbreaker in the FCS Final, and are headed to the NIT Semifinal and WNIT Fab Four.
Illinois State had an incredible season that ended up just short of the FCS Championship. They are the first college football team to play 17+ games since the 19th century.
The problem with the transfer portal is it’s eroding the lifelong bonds that make college football special. Fans and alumni crave those forever connections: like knowing Tim Tebow belongs to Florida, Eric Crouch to Nebraska, or Julio Jones to Alabama. Those historic school-to-player connections define programs and create lifetime loyalty. Now, we’re cheering players for a season or two before they move on, diluting legacies and turning fandom into something transient instead of eternal.
