The Football Supporters’ Association has polled fans over the National League’s “3Up” campaign for three promotion places into the EFL, rather than the current two.

The FSA surveyed 1,980 Premier League, EFL and National League fans. 93% agreed with 3UP in principle. 87% agreed it should be put in place for next season. Even 77% of League Two fans – whose clubs would be at risk from a widened relegation trapdoor - support 3UP. 84% of PL and EFL fans believe 3UP will enhance the sporting attractiveness of the pyramid.

Rachael Maskell, MP for York Central, and other MPs have written to the EFL for its view on 3UP. Maskell’s local club, York City, are currently second in the National League. In her letter to EFL chairman Rick Parry and chief executive Trevor Birch, Maskell asked, “With hopes to create greater fairness in the English football pyramid, I am asking you as the EFL executive the following questions on behalf of my local club. ‘Does the board support three promotions from the National League into League Two?’ ‘Why is the EFL making the National League wait until its ‘New Deal’ is resolved?’”

The EFL is pushing for broader reforms to the game – the so-called New Deal with the Premier League over a more equable redistribution of wealth - and believes 3Up should be part of those discussions. So the FSA’s survey makes particularly interesting reading in that only 23% of fans surveyed believe 3UP should “only” be part of broader reforms.
