As a Catholic and a taxpayer I find it offensive that council staff are being taught that Mary wore a hijab.

Mary was a first century AD Jewish woman (yes, I still do BC and AD) who probably wore a veil or head covering…. SIX HUNDRED years before Islam emerged.

The ‘training’ also teaches that “Jesus grew a beard” as though that somehow proves Islamic customs are compatible with British values.

None of this legitimises medieval dress codes as appropriate in modern day Britain.

Andrew Neil just delivered a BRUTAL reality check to Andy Burnham after that highly praised conference speech.

The praise has been wildly over the top. Some commentators parked their critical thinking because it suited their biases. Thankfully, as usual, Andrew Neil is not one of them.

On the latest @TheNeilReport, he pointed out what Burnham left out of all those lavish plans. The glaring omission: tax rises are coming.

As Neil put it: “It’s quite the socialist manifesto.”

Higher taxes are inevitable.

“In place of markets, privatisation, competition, Mr Burnham wants more state ownership, more state control, much bigger government and higher taxes. Of course he didn’t say higher taxes. Well, he wouldn’t, would he? But if you’re going to have bigger government and more state control and ownership, then there will have to be higher taxes. One follows the other.”

Prepare yourselves. He’s coming for your money to fund his socialist utopia.

Neil also noted that all the big-ticket items were for later. Next parliament. Next manifesto. Almost nothing for the here and now.

Nothing serious on defence or foreign policy. “He glossed over. Barely gave it the time of day.”

Nothing on the imminent “tough” winter or the fuel crisis.

Rising inflation. Rising interest rates. Rising youth unemployment. Rising costs of government borrowing. Nothing.

He finished with this warning: “Mr Burnham deserves his day in the sun. He should enjoy it, because it’s all about to get much darker, much more difficult. Reality is about to strike this winter. His 10-year plan is likely to be unravelling before spring has sprung.”

Criticising, debating and even mocking a religion — including Islam — is not a crime or an act of extremism.

The UK has no blasphemy laws. Parliament voted to abolish them in 2008 — 18 years ago.

Yet activists and extremist ideologues are weaponising the Islamophobia definition to silence criticism of Islam, its history and its practices.

Prevent must not be used to stifle free speech. Doing so would undermine its mission to tackle genuine extremism.

In a free society, no religion is beyond legitimate criticism, challenge and debate — and no religion should be granted greater protection than another.

Here we go again.

John Cleese — the comedian and national treasure — has been reported to the Government’s counter-extremism programme, Prevent, over his social media posts about Islam.

The ability to criticise, debate, challenge and mock a religion is a fundamental right in Britain. Parliament voted to abolish our blasphemy laws in 2008 — 18 years ago. Yet it appears we now have one for Islam alone.

The official Islamophobia definition — repackaged as “anti-Muslim hostility” — has emboldened those who wish to silence criticism of Islam.

One of John’s posts in question reads: “I personally prefer a culture that does not approve of FGM, child marriage and killing infidels.”

The Islamic website 5Pillars reports that the complainant described John’s posts as “dehumanising and collectively attributing violence and criminality to Muslims”, and assessed the risk as “moderate to high”.

Enough is enough. This madness must stop. We cannot allow an Islam-specific blasphemy law to take root.

We stand with @JohnCleese and are ready to help him should he need it.
