Coral Scientist, TED Fellow, @GeorgiaTech 40 Under 40, coral breeding innovation, cryopreservation, fighting for baby corals b/c they have very short arms
HERE IT IS: THE REVEAL!
This is the first time in 15 years of studying corals that I've captured larval settlement in a clear timelapse
Yet EVERY CORAL REEF in the world started from coral larvae doing THIS EXACT THING
The black box of larval dispersal, now in full color🤯🤩😍
Stopping by to share the 2024 Coral Spawning Predictions for the Southern Caribbean, produced by your friends at CARMABI. XOXO🥳 https://t.co/fFbArL0h5P
My colleague @CoralSci Dr. Kristen Marhaver shared her coral babies with me, so we could check the asymmetric activity of early ciliated fields. More details about this type of tracking: https://t.co/xSq3HntiHU. @genikhovich@UlrichTechnau
@WallaceUcsf@BEuplotes I laughed so hard at this… and then I remembered a friend whose job is to worry about rotifer contamination! Thank you guys for the double laughs❤️
PS here are the kinds of shenanigans that Mountainous Star Coral gets into if you give it a few centuries to hang out and make a bunch of copies of itself
Would you like to enjoy a baby coral this afternoon? Here's O. faveolata (the Mountainous Star Coral!) photographed a few minutes ago. It's just hangin out being one month old and hosting some symbiotic algae in its lil noodle arms🧡🍜
@wc_ratcliff @steven_pennings And it can get so much worse! GT spends less per student than other top schools thanks to their relative efficiency… which then lowers their national rankings! Meanwhile Harvard is charging 69% IDC on NSF funds 👀
Would you like to meet the Great Star Coral Montastraea cavernosa? This one is six weeks old!💛
It started out pale and translucent, but it's done a great job making friends with some brown dinoflagellate algae (Symbiodinium!)
Also, double the tentacles from 2 weeks ago💪💪
Video caption: A microscope video of a single brown coral polyp with white speckles against a white background. The polyp extends its 12 tiny tentacles and wiggles around happily. The video goes out of focus because it's so tall! It's about 1 or 2 mm tall. Video speed 150x.
Coral crew! My #ReefFutures talk is Thurs 10:45 but 💛SERIOUSLY DON'T GO TO MY TALK💛They've now put 3 days of talks on Thurs, go to ANY of the other 9 talks, send me a DM, I'll send you a link to my talk. I already cancelled and sent a video instead b/c it's an unmasked event!😩
Update on the Marhaver Lab campaign: we raised close to $11,000 for vital coral reef science. Details at https://t.co/YWbTKJzOcX. Thanks to all who contributed to @CoralSci!
@justinlmatthews TOTALLY! Actually D. stokesii wrote the whole talk while the rest of us just screwed around. I dodged covid at ICRS last summer but 70% of the 1000 people didn't, ugh I was NOT in the mood for that again.
