Your character doesn't "start to" do anything. If they're doing something, they're doing it. They don't "start to" walk, or laugh, or run, or drive a car, or smack someone with a shovel unless they actually get interrupted. No interruption? Delete "start to."

@ChesneyInfalt Not a grammar rule, but I'd like to take this moment to vent about homonyms. Why do they exist? Do I use faint or feint? I look it up every time and forget the answer by the next time I need to use it.
