Modern cremation equipment essentially cremates at a similar temperature. Crematory engineers have determined 1500F to 1600F to be the most efficient. If you are lower you won’t facilitate a thorough cremation. If you are higher you will create emissions and waste copious energy.

Drippings, as you put it, are not a concern at all. All remains are contained in the cremation chamber and will vaporize given the temperature involved. I recall a manufacturer that is no longer in business having issues with larger decedents. As mentioned, that is undignified not just for the decedent but also for the crematory professional. Not to mention a fire hazard that any insurance company would take serious issue with.

Processing technology has also come a long way. This is how we reduce the cremated remains to a uniform consistent size. Ours look like flour or sand. Past processor design could not achieve this resulting in your observable experience.

I get what you mean. Our profession is shrouded in mystery so when I have opportunities like this to educate I’m happy to do so. Like any profession, there are bad apples. I can say the thing I’m most proud of with my organization is the compassionate and sensitive professionals I work with that do this work. In my view, the definition of integrity is doing the right thing when no one is looking.

Our crematory is from a company called FT. The best available by a long distance. It samples fuel/air mixture like 8 times per second. Makes adjustments based on its algorithm. It can handle up to 1200 lbs. but we’ve only done about 900 lbs. You can redline your car’s engine, but is it wise to do so?

All the fuel stays in the chamber of the machine. It does not leak or seep out. I will say much older crematory designs this did used to happen. But if you are proactive with investments in your death care business you don’t have to factor that in. Plus, from a dignity standpoint it’s just not cool.

As for turning the heat down from 2800F to 1500F, that’s where I literally rolled my eyes. The set point for both of our crematories is 1550F. That’s standard. When the machine is below that it tries to get up to it. When it is above that, it activates blowers to get down to that. It’s the happy place it is either trying to maintain or get back to.
