In the heart of Chile’s Atacama Desert lies the stunning ESO Hotel. Prominently featured in the 2008 James Bond film Quantum of Solace, this hotel is not open to the public but serves as accommodation for researchers at the European Southern Observatory.
The ESO Hotel is designed to blend seamlessly into the desert landscape, minimizing its visual impact. It is nestled within a natural depression, with only its central garden dome visible on the horizon.
Constructed primarily from concrete, as brick and steel were economically impractical and unsuitable for the desert environment, the hotel offers 108 rooms, 18 offices, a sauna, gardens, swimming pools, and a library. It has earned the nickname "Oasis for Astronomers."
Situated at an altitude of 2,400 meters, and receiving less than 1 cm of rainfall annually, water had to be transported by tankers to mix the concrete during its construction. Even now, the complex depends on regular water deliveries to remain operational.

[WATCH] It was exactly a year ago when KZN police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi did the unthinkable, by holding that explosive press conference - where he made allegations that shook the country's security cluster to its absolute core. Following that briefing, the Madlanga Commission and ad hoc committees were established to investigate allegations of political interference, corruption and criminal infiltration in our justice system. Newzroom Afrika's senior politics reporter @ZiyandaNgcobo takes us back to that early Sunday morning.
