Cornell researchers have identified a molecular pathway that contributes to the death of insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas.

The discovery suggests a new strategy to preserve the cells that regulate blood sugar and potentially treat Type 2 diabetes.

Thanks to the exponential rise of AI, the rapid construction of large, gigawatt-gobbling data centers across the country has stoked concerns about how the power grid will hold up under this additional strain.

Cornell researchers have proposed a novel way to manage the increased demand for electricity: a credit market that would essentially allow data centers facing required cutbacks to pay flexible energy users to take on their obligations when the grid is strained.

Mathematical models have necessarily reduced distant exoplanets to idealized circles – until now.

Leveraging observations by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and a new mapping method called “transmission strings,” a Cornell-led international research team has for the first time resolved an exoplanet’s uneven contours.

The resulting shape — circle-like, of course, but slightly egg-shaped, with one more extended side — details how intense heat and whipping winds influence the atmosphere of the “hot Jupiter” WASP-17b, orbiting a star more than 1,000 light-years from Earth.

Scientists found a human genetic element in a poxvirus and discovered it was both an important gene for brain function and a jumping gene capable of moving and inserting itself in genomes.

A study published Sept. 24 in Science reports that the gene, called BC200, combines a mix of characteristics that have never been seen before.

The biologic drug interferon-alpha can benefit patients with blood cancers called myeloproliferative neoplasms by forcing mutant blood stem cells to become shorter-lived white blood cells, according to a study by Weill Cornell Medicine investigators.

Because the broad activity of interferon-alpha can induce significant side effects, developing new focused strategies based on these mechanistic findings could meet an important need in cancer therapy.

A new wireless device – lighter than a U.S. dime and shaped like a tiny chef's hat – can track the brain waves of animals as they move in natural habitats, opening doors to understanding complex behaviors that are impossible to study in the lab.

In a recent paper, Cornell University College of Arts and Sciences researchers provide a proof-of-concept for the device, which includes flexible probes that can track groups of neurons for months, as well as different modules to manipulate brain activity or log an animal's locomotion and orientation, vocalizations, and eye movements.

The device, called the Wireless, Interactive, Lightweight Datalogger (WILD), will allow researchers to study how the brain responds to changes in a natural environment and group social contexts for the first time.

Obesity caused by disrupted stress-hormone rhythms is metabolically very different from obesity caused by a high-fat diet, according to a new preclinical study by @WeillCornell investigators.

The researchers found in mice that glucocorticoid-rhythm disruption concentrates insulin resistance in skeletal muscle while preserving key insulin responses in fat tissue and liver. This allows fat tissue to continue storing lipids, while the liver remains largely protected from the fat accumulation typically seen with high-fat diet obesity.
