I think majority of people still believe that way til this day
Back in 2017 or 2018, I sat on stage with a government expert on cryptography and to a question from the audience on the strength of Bitcoin's encryption I answered Bitcoin does not use encryption, it only uses digital signature and hashing algorithm, there's really nothing to decrypt.
I was immediately pulled off stage by the expert, he said he was ok with me [the private sector] saying stupid things but he will not tolerate lies, especially not in front of these 'esteemed audience (government officials)'
I was made to apologize for 'lying' (at that point I didn't even know what he was talking about) and left.
It left me confused for months, until I happened upon his interview on tv to realize that I wasn't the idiot in that moment.
