In May 1997 Roberto Carlos spoke out after being racially abused at Camp Nou:
"When we went to play in Barcelona, the fans would call me monkey every time I touched the ball. This is the only stadium where we have had that problem” he said.
Pep Guardiola who played that game for Barcelona responded by saying "That man talks too much," adding Roberto Carlos doesn't know the Barcelona fans well enough to call them racist.
Barcelona fans then sang “Roberto Carlos, f*cking chimpanzee" & scratched the word ‘monkey’ on his car.
