It’s either “the point being” followed by the reason, or “the point is” followed by the reason.
“The point being is” makes no sense, as though a “point being” is a certain type of point, perhaps a particularly pointy point 🤣
@ajbonner@CeliaBedelia Here in Cornwall the conversation would go something like: “Alright”, “Alright” - roughly translated as: “Hi, how are you?” “I’m fine, thank you! How are you?” … and you’ve said everything and nothing, all in one word each 😁

“Do you have a pen handy?” is short for “Do you have a pen to hand?” (similar to US English)
You wouldn’t call a person “handy” - too close to handsy 😂😳😱

@crowmogh@Greenfleeves ‘Sucks the heart out of a place’ is exactly it. I recognise the geography of St Ives but I don’t really recognise the place anymore. All the houses where people lived when I was young are now holiday houses. The town feels hollow although it’s heaving
