Others are written because certain characters simply refuse to leave.
Wes Garrett was the second kind.
Long before this novel existed, I could already see him clearly—a Deputy U.S. Marshal who solved problems differently than everyone around him. While others reacted, Wes anticipated. He didn't rely on luck. He relied on preparation, discipline, observation, and the lessons his father taught him.

If you've ever wondered where Wes Garrett came from, the truth is, he's a little bit of every hero I admired growing up.
I loved the characters portrayed by Clint Eastwood, Chuck Norris, and Mel Gibson.
I also became a fan of author Robert B. Parker's Spenser for Hire and Jesse Stone, whose stories showed me that a hero didn't have to be the loudest man in the room.
He could be thoughtful, observant, quietly confident—and still be the toughest guy in the fight.
From the very beginning, this story was written cinematically. Every chapter was envisioned as though it were unfolding on screen, with an emphasis on visual storytelling, character-driven dialogue, and grounded action.
The novel is over 660 pages-
