I believe the conversation must now shift toward a major reset of college football.

Group of 6 programs simply cannot compete with rosters carrying payrolls of $20+ million per season. The talent gap between the P4 and the G6 is now massive arguably surpassing the gap that exists between the G6 and the FCS.

Yes, there are rare upsets. And yes, you can debate the lower tier of the ACC or Big 12. But overall, the discrepancy in talent, depth, and resources has made truly competitive games the exception rather than the rule.

Personally, I want my favorite team Marshall to have a legitimate opportunity to be the best within its proper division. I also want to be part of a league that represents what college football should be, not about who can pay the most, but about players fighting for their school, their teammates, and their culture.

We can’t ignore the fact that programs like Montana State, South Dakota State, North Dakota State, and others thrive because they regularly compete for an FCS championship. Their cultures are elite because they have something real to play for every season.

If a new division were created for the G6 collectively, I believe fan bases would embrace it. We’d see home playoff games, real postseason excitement, and energy buzzing across campuses. Instead of meaningless midweek bowl games in empty stadiums, we’d be watching meaningful playoff games in prime time on separate days from the P4 playoff.

Universities would benefit financially with additional home games, stronger TV deals, and renewed pride, knowing the season can end in something that truly matters.

Let’s be honest: Marshall will never compete with Ohio State. Western Kentucky will never compete with Alabama. James Madison will never compete with Oregon. That’s the reality of the sport today. So instead of pretending otherwise, let’s change it level the playing field and make college football fun again.

I know many will disagree. But I would much rather spend my Saturday watching the Herd play in a meaningful playoff game than watching other teams compete for a championship my school will never realistically have a chance to win.

Major changes are coming to this sport. And I believe this is the direction it’s heading. Some won’t like it, but just because an idea is unpopular doesn’t mean it isn’t necessary
