Many Presidents have promised to deliver full federal recognition to the great Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina.
Only President Trump actually delivered.
The Lumbee Tribe has been in North Carolina since long before we became a state. The Lumbee were officially recognized by the State of North Carolina in 1885 and have fought for their fair share from the federal government for more than a century. I applaud today’s long-delayed federal recognition, which will allow Tribe members access to the health care, education, housing, child care, and disaster relief benefits afforded other federally recognized tribes. These benefits will create economic opportunities for the Tribe and the surrounding communities. Congratulations to the Lumbee Tribe!
The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina is now officially the 575th federally recognized tribe in the United States.
Thank you @POTUS Trump for helping fulfill a long overdue promise!
Congress has finally fulfilled its overdue promise to provide the Lumbee Tribe full federal recognition and access to every federal benefit they have earned and deserve.
BREAKING: The U.S. Senate voted Wednesday to grant full federal recognition for the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina, a moment 137 years in the making.

Tonight, the House passed the FY26 NDAA. This negotiated legislation authorizes critical funding and resources for the Department of War, including a 3.8% pay raise for our brave servicemembers, strengthens national security by bolstering DHS at our borders, and advances North Carolina’s priorities—including full federal recognition of the Lumbee Tribe. Very proud to support this historic bill that makes America stronger!
For decades, the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina has fought for the full federal recognition they rightfully deserve.
Now we're closer than ever. With the Lumbee Fairness Act in this year's NDAA, it's time to deliver. Let's get this done!
I was honored to join @SenThomTillis , Lumbee Tribe Chairman John Lowery, Catawba Nation Chief Brian Harris, @SenTedBuddNC, @RepMarkHarrisNC, and members of the Lumbee Tribe for a press conference today.
The House passed the Lumbee Fairness Act in the NDAA, and today Senator Tillis and Chairman Lowery fiercely advocated for Lumbee recognition during the Senate Indian Affairs Committee hearing. We will not stop until Congress rights this wrong.
Shohei Ohtani had an all-time great performance that will be talked about forever.
