THE SNAKES OF THE VIRGIN MARY IN KEFALONIA

From today until August 15th, when the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God is celebrated in Greece, the Kefalonian snakes or "holy snakes of the Virgin Mary" (agiofides) appear on the island of Kefalonia in the Church of the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God.

Interestingly, the snakes continued to appear on the feast of the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God even after the Greek Church accepted the new calendar and the feast of the Dormition was moved 13 days earlier.

In the eastern region of Kefalonia (an island in the Ionian Sea), not far from the village of Markopoulo, there is a small church dedicated to the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God. Here, for many years, once a year on the feast of the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God, something unusual happens:

From the Feast of the Transfiguration, snakes appear inside and outside the church.

The locals call them the snakes of the Most Holy Mother of God. Every day the number of snakes increases, and on the eve of the Dormition, they are present throughout the entire surrounding area. During those days, the residents of the village of Markopoulo go through the valley on whose slope the church is located and collect the snakes in order to bring them to the Most Holy Mother of God.

According to an 18th-century tradition, when pirates attacked the village, the nuns prayed to the Virgin Mary to save them, and instead, snakes appeared and drove the invaders away.

Where these snakes come from and where they disappear to after the holiday—no one knows.

It is a great mystery to everyone.

During the all-night vigil service, the snakes slither freely among the people: over the stasidia (monastic stalls) and analogia (lecterns), completely unafraid of anyone.
