Q: I’d like to hear about the combination of "Soft Violence."

T: When I thought about why I brought these two opposing words together, it’s because I felt that duality exists even within beauty. Love is the same way. Even between lovers, there are moments of conflict, and on the flip side, trying to adjust yourself to fit your partner because you love them so much is also, in a way, soft violence. I divided and blended points that aren't easy to catch into my own keywords.

Q: ​When you love someone deeply, you try to do things they’d like, even if it means losing a bit of yourself. But in the end, that’s still love, right?

T: In the end, it’s love. And musically, I keep thinking I shouldn't repeat what I've done so far, but people tell me that after coming full circle, it still feels distinctly like me. I admit that part. Sometimes people call my work experimental, but just as people have tastes, I think I have a certain temperament. No matter how much I try something new, there's a core foundation, and I'd say I'm making new attempts within that essence. Boldly speaking, this album is new. At least, I think the story I'm trying to tell will resonate well.

​Q: The new EP <PHASE 1 : SOFT VIOLENCE> will be released on Aug. 31st at 6pm KST. What did you start with this time?

T: In the past, I started albums with predefined concepts; intense, sexy, symbolic, or rebellious, but this time was different. I thought carefully about what story to tell from my own experiences and where to focus. Having done commercial music for a long time, I wanted to create competitiveness in a different way rather than repeating myself. It feels like homework I have to overcome as an artist and musician. Right now, I feel like I am in a transitional phase, somewhere in the middle of redefining that direction.

Q: If there is a point that has changed this time in the way you handle your body on stage?

T: In one of the b-side tracks, I tried expressing my body in a way closer to contemporary dance. It’s not long, but I plan to expand it into fuller choreography on stage. In another track, on the contrary, I put more weight on the performance. Because the performance comes out visually strong, it's a song that has the effect of making the music sound even better auditorily.

​Q: Then what should fans look out for first?

T: What I want to show through the stage is the biggest thing. When the album comes out, some fans might encounter the photos or physical album first, but these days, not everyone consumes content in the release order. So rather than just listening to the song first, I recommend watching it together with the video. It's the visual result of what I felt while listening to the music.

Q: As the person Lee Taemin.

T: Lately, Lee Taemin often reflects on himself and thinks about maintaining dignity. I think as I get older, keeping that dignity is how I can grow into a true artist, but in reality, I often feel like an elementary school student.

At home, I act cute and play lots of pranks with my cats, and I talk to myself a lot. I'll hum a song and suddenly start dancing and pretending to look cool in front of a mirror I pass by. I once heard that to keep doing music, you have to stay childish to keep producing creative things. I don't know if that's true, but my worry these days is that you can't hide your age. I'm not even that old yet, but I'm somewhere between thinking I need to carry myself with age-appropriate dignity and still being immature.
