The more we observe the ocean, the better we can understand and protect it.

At the UN General Assembly (#UNGA 81) in New York, the EU and Canada joined forces to launch the #OceanEye Alliance for stronger global ocean observation.

Good exchanges today in the margins of the #AGRIFISH Council in Brussels with 🇫🇷@CathChabaud, 🇭🇷 @david_vlajcic, 🇮🇹@FrancescoLollo1 and 🇩🇰 Maria Reumert Gjerding.

We focused, among others, on the Multiannual Financial Framework 2028 -2034 for #fisheries, the need for fleet modernisation, the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) priorities, the fishing opportunities under the WestMed and the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF) amendment proposal.

One main takeaway: 🇪🇺 fisheries need investment, resilience and a level playing field.

We are working for competitive fisheries, thriving coastal communities and a healthy ocean.

Εurope’s fisheries need support to modernise, adapt and compete — while keeping our seas productive for the future.

At today’s #AGRIFISH Council, we focused on the choices ahead:

➡️ a strong and sustainable framework for fisheries in the 2028–2034 EU budget. We take note of the efforts by the Irish presidency that led the Council to reach a Partial General Approach.
It was my responsibility to highlight the Commission’s concerns on the text.

➡️ simpler, more flexible #EMFAF support including for fleet modernisation and the energy transition. Our targeted EMFAF amendment is designed to turn that principle into practical support: less complexity, better access to funding and more tools for fishers and aquaculture producers.

➡️ defending EU fishing interests in the 2027 North-East Atlantic consultations.

➡️ strengthening Europe’s fisheries globally through our upcoming Vision 2040.

The sector is under pressure. Europe must help it modernise, invest and remain sustainable, competitive and resilient.

Closing my #UNGA81 participation at the high-level meeting on sea-level rise which is already changing lives, coastlines and communities.

No country can tackle global challenges alone.
At a time when multilateralism is being tested, we are determined: cooperation, international law and science remain essential to protect people and our ocean.

Through the European Ocean Pact, the Ocean Eye and our new international alliance in support of the Global Ocean Observing System, the 🇪🇺 is helping turn knowledge into preparedness — and preparedness into resilience.

When the ocean rises, isolation is not a strategy. Cooperation is.

We are decisively laying out the pathway for ocean-climate outcomes at the forthcoming COP31.

At the #UNGA81 High-Level meeting on Accelerating Blue Climate Solutions I made clear that only through multilateral cooperation and strong partnerships will we be able to address the challenges facing our ocean.

Today at #UNGA, with Heads of States and leaders from across the world, I was pleased to open @UNESCO’s “One Ocean” exhibition, dedicated to bringing ocean knowledge closer to people and turning understanding into action.

Protecting the ocean begins with understanding it. Through @IocUnesco, we advance the science, observations and knowledge needed for informed action. Through ocean literacy, we bring that knowledge into classrooms, communities and everyday life.

I am grateful to the Prada Group for its longstanding partnership with UNESCO, which has already brought ocean education to more than 41,000 students worldwide.

Together, we can strengthen our connection with the ocean and inspire action to protect our shared blue planet.

With the Global Ocean Eye Alliance launched today to support ocean observation, the 🇪🇺 is investing in better knowledge of our ocean and in the next generation that will protect it.

I would welcome this exhibition to be presented in the next European Ocean days, in 2027.

Today, at #UNGA81 we have witnessed the international community’s dedication and commitment to global ocean observation: for healthier ecosystems, safer navigation, resilient supply chains, a stronger offshore economy and maritime security.
More than 30 countries have joined the global OceanEye alliance, and pledge more than EUR 211 million, in new financial or in-kind contributions, to sustain the Global Ocean Observation system.
We can be proud of this achievement.
This is a major step but only the beginning.
We need more countries, philanthropies, NGOs and businesses to join, contribute and turn ambition into lasting action.
Next stop: the United Nations climate change conference COP31.
