Georgios Karaiskakis was one of the most charismatic and controversial military leaders of the Greek War of Independence (1821–1829).

He rose to become commander-in-chief of Greek forces in Rumeli (central mainland Greece). He is remembered for his guerrilla tactics, reckless bravery, sharp wit, and profane, defiant personality—earning him nicknames like "the Nun's Son" and "Old Man of the Mountains."

He also packed balls of steel and a heavy duty mustache.
