Let EV owners pay for their charging infrastructure and contribute fairly to maintaining the roads they use, just as petrol and diesel drivers do.

According to the latest AusTender contracts, the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water has set aside up to $4,217,040 of taxpayers’ money to host delegates at a pre-COP31 meeting in Fiji in early October, which Mr Bowen will preside over as the Conference of the Parties co-president.

Just weeks after Mr Bowen claimed the cost of his COP31 role was “good value”, the government lodged a tender of up to $2,113,468 for “hotels, lodging and meeting facilities” at the Sheraton Fiji Golf and Beach Resort, a five-star waterfront getaway and 18-hole golf course that fetches up to $1200 per night for a room.

An extra $19,867 has been carved out for the nearby Radisson Blu Resort Fiji – a third five-star property with beach views, four lagoon-style pools and a water slide.

I understand researching whether these laws work, but why does an online safety regulator need access to Medicare and PBS records? That's a pretty big leap.

Privacy shouldn't be taken from us under the guise of research. Don't permit access to your medical or other personal data unless you're absolutely convinced there's a genuine and justifiable reason.

And never forget, regulators answer to the government of the day, not to the Australian people. That's exactly why they should be questioned whenever they ask for more power.

The eSafety Commissioner has sought access to Medicare and pharmaceutical records as part of its research into Labor’s under-16 social media restrictions, expanding the government’s online-control experiment into Australians’ health and prescription histories.

Documents released through Services Australia’s FOI log reveal eSafety requested approval to link survey responses from children aged 10 to 16 and their families with Medicare Benefits Schedule and Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme records. The study will follow more than 4,000 children and families for over two years, combining surveys with optional smartphone monitoring, interviews, NAPLAN results and government health data.

The Australian Institute of Family Studies will manage the linkage, secure transfer and integration of the records before delivering a final linked dataset to the eSafety Commissioner. The project documents also require consent files, metadata and identifying information to be transferred for the linkage process. Consent is optional, with parental approval and child assent required for younger participants, but this does not remove the need for intense scrutiny over why an internet regulator requires access to children’s medical treatment and subsidised medicine histories.

Australians were told this regime was about stopping children from opening social media accounts. It has now grown into a multi-year government study linking children’s online behaviour, smartphone use, school results, medical services and prescription data. eSafety must disclose every MBS and PBS field requested, the historical period covered, who can access the linked records, how identifiable information is separated, how long the data will be retained and whether overseas academics will receive access.

The government cannot demand greater access to the private lives of Australian families while hiding the operational details inside FOI releases and research documents. Health information is among the most sensitive data the Commonwealth holds. It should never become another convenient input for regulators determined to measure, monitor and justify an expanding censorship regime.
