Benon’s first carbon payment of UGX 800,000 showed him that trees could provide a real alternative to hunting and illegal timber cutting.

He invested the benefits into his family, farming and businesses, while his trees grew into a thriving forest.

Before he became a conservation champion, Benon Bushoborozi was a hunter and illegal tree cutter in Queen Elizabeth National Park.

In 2002, he joined ECOTRUST’s Trees for Global Benefit programme and planted his first trees.

When @ECOTRUST_Ug's Trees for Global Benefit programme reached his community, Reverend Mutabaazi planted 200+ indigenous trees, expanding the forest he had spent decades nurturing.

Today, birds have returned, the landscape is greener, and his forest has become a place of peace.

At 88 years old, Reverend Emmanuel Mutabaazi is still protecting a forest he began planting in 1989.

Long before climate change became a global conversation, he was already teaching his community that caring for nature was part of caring for God’s creation.
