There are different methods of synthesizing methamphetamine. If you’ve ever watched the popular television program “Breaking Bad”, you may observe discussions about a “P2P cook”. P2P is short for phenyl-2-propanone, also commonly called phenylacetone.

P2P synthesis is popular with large scale methamphetamine production because it’s scalable - it’s trivial to increase batch size (to a point). The challenge with P2P synthesis is your end product is racemic. This means it has both the left and right molecule. The right molecule is the “good” one, the left molecule has unpleasant side effects (jittery feeling, grinding ones teeth). So the product must be chirally resolved with an acid. That just means separating/filtering out the left and right handed molecules. So it’s an additional step in production.

Conventional clandestine methods use ephedrine or pseudoephedrine as a precursor. You may have heard the television program reference such synthesis as a “pseudo cook”. For example using red phosphorus, iodine and pseudoephedrine. The benefit to these methods is chiral resolution is unnecessary. When you use ephedrine as a precursor you’ve already preselected for the “good” right handed molecule. So there is no need for the final step with the tartaric acid.

However, these conventional methods aren’t as scalable as a P2P synthesis. It’s difficult to increase batch sizes after a certain point. That’s why industrial manufacturing either employs P2P synthesis or another racemic method called the “Birch reaction”.
