Most crypto investors are not trying to dodge taxes.
Most of them genuinely have no idea what their tax situation looks like.
They traded on one exchange, moved funds to another, connected a few wallets, chased airdrops, bridged into some random chain, staked something, sold something, forgot about something, and then a year later they’re expected to explain all of it to a CPA.
If you filed a crypto tax extension in April, May is the danger zone.
This is when people mentally file the problem away, then reopen it in September and realize their "simple" return depends on four wallets, three exchanges, missing basis, and a DeFi protocol that no longer exists.
An extension simply gives you more time to file. But it does not make the transaction history cleaner.
If you traded across Coinbase, Kraken, wallets, DeFi, NFTs, bridges, and random chains...
Your tax software is only as accurate as the cleanup behind it.
Bad labels in = bad tax report out.
Crypto tax software helps.
It does not magically know what every transfer, swap, bridge, staking reward, airdrop, actually was. It’s very important as you do these trades for the rest of the year, you write down what they were so you remember come tax time.
If you filed an extension because your crypto taxes were a mess, that’s fine.
But don’t wait until October to open the same broken CSVs again.
The whole point of extension season is to fix the records while there’s still time.

The IRS doesn’t care what your PnL screenshot says.
It cares what your Form 8949 says.
If your exchange reports proceeds without cost basis, a break-even trade can look like pure profit on paper.
That’s how people end up severely overpaying.
Crypto tax tip:
Before you file or amend, check every “sale” your tax software created from wallet transfers.
Moving crypto from Coinbase to MetaMask, Ledger, Phantom, etc. is not taxable by itself.
But if your wallets aren’t connected correctly, the software may treat it like you sold.
That mistake can inflate your gains fast.
Canada's tax deadline is 6 days away.
If you traded crypto in 2025 and still have missing transactions, messy wallets, or no clear cost basis, now is the time to fix it.
Waiting until the last minute usually leads to one of two outcomes:
You file with bad numbers, or you file late.
Neither is a good option.
The CRA deadline is coming fast. If your crypto activity is still a mess, get it cleaned up now so you can file accurately and move on.
If you filed a tax extension for your crypto taxes, you did not buy yourself six months to ignore it.
The people who wait until October usually make the same 5 mistakes:
>Waiting too long to reconcile wallets and exchanges
>Trusting incomplete 1099s or exchange exports
>Missing cost basis on transfers, DeFi, or old wallets
>Forgetting staking, rewards, or other taxable income
>Rushing the return again in October and filing bad numbers
