CovenCards

CovenCards -- A strategic Card Game that lets you act your weird magic and accurately simulates all it's unforseen consequences.

Developed by @opgjoh

Been working on a Map Editor!
Most battles should take place on generated maps, but I want to use hand-made levels for tutorials, puzzles and perhaps story sequences? (!!)
Not pretty, but it's not intended for anyone but me, so it'll do. #gamedev #cardgames #madewithgodot

My card game correctly handling all the different types of tiles in the forest: rivers can be electrically charged, grass burns and spreads at end of turn, ice freezes everything, too. Systemic gameplay, here we come! #gamedev #madewithgodot #cardgames #screenshotsaturday

[CovenCards @CovenCards]

Generated Battlefields -- here, a forest clearing -- now set the correct "material" for their tiles (for example, nothing will catch fire in the River). Shown here via tooltip. Believe me, this is very exciting behind the scenes.

In my Card Game, the battlefield is a part of the Duel, providing space for structures, hiding spaces or materials for elemental interactions. Here's a new variant. the "Forest" Layout with vegetation, grass and a river! #gamedev #madewithgodot #screenshotsaturday

[CovenCards @CovenCards]

Every Card now has a 3D scene shown when using or hovering over that card. Otherwise, a still image of the scene is shown instead.
Should make everything look more dynamic!
Next on the agenda is adding the Card Text back!

More experiments with "3D-cards": This time, it's an actual 3D scene! Calculations now done by the engine, and I can use the editor to arrange everything. Not fully sure if I prefer this, but I do like it. Makes things like particle FX easier.
#gamedev #cardgame #madewithgodot

[CovenCards @CovenCards]

@mtgrzonka @opgjoh Yeah, you're right. I can handle this by placing the fireball a bit more carefully into the middle of the frame, and have it shift less (appearing less close to the "camera"). Thanks for the input! :)

[CovenCards @CovenCards]

"Fake 3D"-cards: 2D elements are layered and morphed to appear "3D". Not sure I like it, and if it justifies the effort it'll take.
Might be easier to map it all in a real 3D environment and let the engine/hardware figure out the transforms. #gamedev #cardgame #madewithgodot

[CovenCards @CovenCards]

I present to you: Filter settings for the Deck Editor! For now, you can filter by cost, card type (what it mainly does) or search for words in its text.

I'm now working on CovenCard's Deck Editor!
I try to keep with the visual cards (instead of just names) as much as possible. Also shown are some statistics, though we'll have to see if they'll be useful in real games later.

[CovenCards @CovenCards]

New camera movement when viewing the ingame log, and if you hover over an entry mentioning a place, thats highlighted in the 3D-view!
Oh, and I implemented new, human-readable coordinates. #gamedev #screenshotsaturday #madewithgodot #indiedev #cardgame

[CovenCards @CovenCards]

The last Battle-Log feature for now: Get the played card's information via mouse-over.
(Full Disclaimer: I've added the fade to black (and of course the YouTube-esque red circle) to highlight what I mean in Photoshop, that's not ingame). #cardgame #godotengine #gamedev #indiegame

[CovenCards @CovenCards]

Now, physical Movements (from throws, but also explosions) are added to the Battle-Log!
These entries are animated, so you can take your time to understand what happened -- essential in chain reactions!
#gamedev #indiedev #cardgame #madewithgodot #screenshotsaturday

[CovenCards @CovenCards]

Some more, mostly internal, overhauls of the logging system: Now, similar entries are merged where it makes sense, reducing clutter a bit.
The system is pretty robust now, so adding other types of entries should be simple.. Except Movement via Physics :( #gamedev #madewithgodot

[CovenCards @CovenCards]

Turns out: If you add complicated chaotic chain-reactions to your game, you better allow the player to check what happened in a Log. Here's an early version! #gamedev #cardgame #madewithgodot #GodotEngine

[CovenCards @CovenCards]

The AI now places Sigils! Looks like we're besties summoning tons of dark forces from beyond, but that's not quite it! See, we're not besties. With lots of Exploding Sigils placed, I've also fixed bugs for multiple explosions happening in a row. #gamedev #cardgame #godotengine

[CovenCards @CovenCards]

Teaching the AI how to summon monsters to the field, and suddenly the battlefield is full of slimes.
Nature is healing.
#gamedev #madewithgodot #cardgame

[CovenCards @CovenCards]

A new card allows you to see in advance what the Sigils placed by your opponents do -- will you invest resources into knowing, or will you call their bluff and take a guess? #madewithgodot #gamedev

I hope you can appreciate the programmer's art I've been using here.

[CovenCards @CovenCards]

Sometimes, what you want ARE the errors ending the match.

Here, the game detects that the other player sent a message to reveal information, without there having been cause for that. In other words, a cheating attempt.

[CovenCards @CovenCards]

Fixing synchronization issues in my indie #cardgame !

Check out this match, in which navigation around the altar (w/ green flame), granting fire immunity, was key! #gamedev #screenshotsaturday #madewithgodot Also features explosions, you know, for flair.
