Russian forces have reportedly fitted a UAZ-452 “Bukhanka” vehicle with mirrored panels as a potential countermeasure against drones using optical or AI-assisted guidance.

Back in 2021, Elon Musk was literally laughing when concerns were raised about Tesla’s water use in Germany. Asked about regional water scarcity, he dismissed the concerns as “completely wrong.” “Look around you,” he said. “There’s water everywhere here.” The factory was built anyway.

Fast forward, and the region is under significant water pressure. Tesla’s factory requires around 1.4 million cubic metres of water a year, while local residents have faced restrictions, including a 105-litre-per-person daily limit during the water supply dispute.

And then there’s the wastewater. In 2024, the local water authority said Tesla was exceeding permitted phosphorus and nitrogen limits, reportedly reaching up to six times the legal levels. Authorities even discussed cutting off the factory’s wastewater connection.

🛑 Iran has obtained nearly intact US MQ-9 Reaper and Israeli Hermes 900 drones

The captured UAVs could now be handed over to IRGC engineers for study. Iran may attempt to reverse-engineer their technology and key components for use in its own domestically produced drones.

Given the close military and technical cooperation between Tehran and Moscow, there is also a risk that some of these technologies could eventually make their way to Russia.

SpaceX went public at $1.75 trillion in June. Yesterday it committed $16.8 billion to a chip fab in Grimes County, Texas. Follow the chain connecting those two numbers and you end at a light source that doesn't exist yet.

Start from the top. SpaceX has filed for up to 1 million data-center satellites, targeting hundreds of gigawatts of compute in orbit. Musk says current global chip output covers about 3% of what his companies will eventually need. So Terafab exists to print over 1 terawatt of compute per year across 100 million square feet, the largest chip site ever attempted.

Here's where the physics bites. Every advanced chip gets patterned with EUV light, and today that light comes from vaporizing 50,000 molten tin droplets per second with a laser inside each $200 million scanner. The tin splatters, the power caps out, and every scanner needs its own source.

A free-electron laser flips the architecture. Shoot electrons through undulator magnets and you get roughly 4x the EUV power with no tin debris. One accelerator can feed up to 20 scanners for 30 years, cutting per-wafer costs by about half.

That math is mediocre for TSMC, which spreads fabs across dozens of sites. A single 100 million square foot campus is the one place on Earth where a central light plant amortizes perfectly. Terafab's weird design choice and the FEL's weird economics fit each other like a key in a lock.

The pieces are already moving. Pat Gelsinger chairs xLight, which just took a $150 million CHIPS award to build the first FEL prototype in Albany by 2028. ASML's CEO confirmed Musk is in direct talks about Terafab.

Starlink pays the bills. Starship gets the applause. The number that decides whether SPCX holds $2 trillion is photons per second at 13.5 nanometers.

🇺🇦 🇷🇺 Footage shows Ukrainian FPV interceptor successfully neutralizing a Russian fiber-optic quadcopter using a net.

Fiber-optic drones (which use a thin cable for control instead of radio signals) are harder to jam with electronic warfare. In response, Ukraine has developed and deployed small FPV drones that chase these targets and deploy a net to physically capture or disable them mid-air.

This is a low-cost, kinetic counter-drone method that has become more common as both sides adapt to evolving drone tactics on the battlefield.

🇺🇸NATO’s nuclear tripwire is still very real:

The U.S. keeps an estimated 100–130 tactical nuclear warheads (mainly modernized B61-12s) in Europe under nuclear sharing.

They’re stored under exclusive American control in underground vaults at bases in Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Turkey, and the UK.
