"My children didn't choose to be born. I chose to have children. They owe me nothing. I owe them everything."
- Elon Musk (with one of the greatest quotes about fatherhood you'll ever read)
When you become a dad, your life is no longer yours. Your life is now shared. And part of you will always belong to them
This makes a lot of men uncomfortable. They think it means they have to be 100% selfless and sacrificing for the rest of their lives
But they're thinking about it wrong. Owing your children everything doesn't mean you have to sacrifice your health and goals and ideals
It means the exact opposite, actually. It means you now have an undeniable mandate to make yourself as good as you can possibly be
It's more than protecting. It's more than providing. It's more than preparing. It's all of those at once. And the whole is greater than the sum of its parts
To improve on those areas requires selfish dedication. It requires selfish protection of your time. You can't help others with their oxygen masks if you're struggling to breathe yourself
It's that selfish time working on yourself makes you a better dad. Which means it's actually the most selfless thing you can do
