라이언 테더: 집에서 (영상을) 보시는 분들 중에 방시혁 의장이나 하이브가 뒤에서 조종하고 있다고 생각하시는 분 계시나요? 그 사람들이요?
​잭 생: 아뇨, 아뇨, 아뇨.
​라이언 테더: 많은 분들이 그렇게 생각하시더라고요. 전혀 아닙니다. BTS가 모든 걸 직접 고릅니다.
​잭 생: 맞아요.
​라이언 테더: 멤버들이 직접 곡을 쓰고, 노래를 고르고, 방향성도 결정해요. 그 그룹에게서 직접 나온 결과물이지, 배후에서 조종하는 사람은 아무도 없습니다. 그래서 방 의장이 마침내 저에게 말해줬는데, 왜냐하면 제가 그냥... 솔직히 말해서 제가 방 의장을 계속 괴롭혔기 때문에 저한테 유리한 점이 좀 있었죠.
​라이언 테더: 전 계속 캐물을 생각이었거든요. 심지어 그때는 디플로(Diplo)가 참여하고 있다는 사실도 몰랐어요. 아무튼 방 의장이 마침내 어떤 컨셉인지, 어떤 사운드인지 설명해 주었습니다. 그리고 그 영감들과 멤버들이 추구하는 방향을 듣고 전 정말 신선한 충격을 받았습니다. 왜냐하면 당시 LA에 있는 모든 사람들이 하던 것과는 정반대였거든요. 그때 LA에 있던 사람들은 너나 할 것 없이 저스틴 비버의 "Purpose" 앨범 같은 스타일을 쫓고 있었으니까요.
​잭 생: 멤버들에게 어떤 피드백이 왔는지 말해줄 수 있나요? 그 지시 사항이 무엇이었는지요?
라이언 테더: 이것만 말씀드릴게요. "이걸 고대로 베껴라" 같은 게 아니라, "멤버들이 요즘 뭘 듣고 있는가"에 더 가까웠어요. "가서 이거 베껴와" 같은 식은 절대 아니었습니다. 멤버들이 실제로 듣는 음악들에 대한 거였죠. 070 셰이크(070 Shake)도 있었고, 타일러 더 크리에이터(Tyler, the Creator)도 있었고, 트래비스 스콧(Travis Scott)이나... 아마 대여섯 명 정도 더 있었을 텐데 릴 야티(Lil Yachty)나 테임 임파라(Tame Impala) 같은 음악들이었어요. 우리가 생각했던 것과는 놀라울 정도로 달랐습니다. 대중들의 입장에서 생각해보면, 제가 그 친구들에게서 마지막으로 들었던 곡은 "Butter"였잖아요? 다른 사람들도 마찬가지고요. 그리고 "Dynamite"도 있죠. 그 곡들은 BTS가 했던 음악 중 가장 팝(Pop)스러운 곡들이었습니다. 그때 방 의장이 저에게 해준 최고의 조언은 "그들의 초기 음악을 다시 가서 들어보라"는 것이었습니다.
​잭 생: 초기 음악들 정말 끝내주죠.
​라이언 테더: 맞아요. 초기 음악을 다시 들어보라고 하더군요. 그래서 다시 찾아서 들어봤는데 "와, 이 친구들 내내 랩만 하고 있잖아!" 싶었죠.
​잭 생: 맞아요!
​라이언 테더: 그리고 훨씬 더 강렬한 비트의 음악들이었어요. 그걸 보고 "오케이" 했습니다. 그래서 사운드적으로 그 사이의 균형을 잘 잡아야(바늘귀를 꿰어야) 했습니다. 전 그런 걸 좋아해요. 이럴 때 제 좌뇌가 엄청나게 활성화되거든요.
​제가 정말 싫어하는 게 뭐냐면 (그리고 이런 방식을 좋아하는 작곡가들도 있긴 하지만요), 아티스트나 다른 작곡가들이 있는 작업실에 들어가서 "오늘 우리 뭐 만들까?" 했을 때, "그냥 엄청 쩌는 거 하나 만들자!"라고 말하는 거예요.
라이언 테더: 그래서 저에게는 마침내 "오케이, 멤버들이 이런 음악을 듣고 있구나"라는 정보와, 동시에 방 의장이 말한 "그들의 오리지널 작업물들을 들어보라"는 가이드가 생긴 거죠. 그 오리지널 작업물들과 멤버들이 현재 듣고 있는 음악 사이의 어딘가에 바로 '해답(플롯)'이 있는 겁니다. 그걸 찾아내는 게 제 역할이고요.

Pause. Pause and listen to Ryan explain how Body to Body was born. I was grinning the whole time.

You can clearly see there’s a reason why once artists work with BTS, their whole perception about who they are changes. Just from watching this full interview, you can tell the kind of drive and mindset that comes from Ryan Tedder as an artist, as a producer, aligns very closely with who BTS are as artists and musicians and how they’ve always approached their work.

There’s no ambiguity in their goals. And it’s not about making hits. But it’s about music that speaks to them. Music that then, also speaks to others. It’s enthralling to listen to.

And it’s that misconception people have that skews first impressions. Until they meet BTS, dive deeper into their work, and realise oh shit. These guys are the real deal. They care about their music. About their fans. They care about what they say. They care about every single beat and lyric and flow. Not just putting a bunch of samples and words together.

Ryan talks about that throughout this interview and it made me see why he was a part of Arirang the way he was.
