Youth sports are in a generation-long identity crisis.

The main issue is the fear of falling behind.

Adult fear creates a “radiating effect” for motivated kids:

1. Once selected, kids get more sport-specific practice
2. Narrow practice increases probability of junior success at the price of senior success
3. More specialized practice early gets players selected
4. Immediate success is interpreted as a sign this process works
