It was a great day in #KCSRegion2! I was pleased to meet Chase and Krissy Phillips of Village Church, which did volunteer landscaping work for @NorwoodTigers on Sunday, and it was inspiring to see Ms. Hudson provide outstanding math instruction to students from @NMS_Rangers!
“And he is the head of the body, the church.”
Colossians 1:18
No matter how much the water rises, as long as the head is above water, the body can’t drown.
Politics make good idols.
Idols have to be protected.
When idols are challenged, people get violent, defensive and irrational because our deepest emotions and security are connected to them.
The Gospel overcomes our idolatry when our security and comfort is in Christ.
In heaven, it’s not that we look back and see the reasons bad things happen and say, “Oh... that’s why that happened.” Rather, we will say, “What bad things?"
We will be so consumed with God’s finished product we won’t remember the process he used.
“Hearing the word of the cross … is the central strategy for sinners in the fight for joy. Nothing works without this. Here is where we start. And here is where we stay. We never outgrow the gospel.”
- Piper
The only way I can develop the courage to ‘go’ is by the conviction that Jesus is worth it.
“BUT WHATEVER GAIN I HAD, I COUNTED AS LOSS FOR THE SAKE OF CHRIST. INDEED, I COUNT EVERYTHING AS LOSS BECAUSE OF THE SURPASSING WORTH OF KNOWING CHRIST JESUS MY LORD.”
PHIL. 3:7-8
Gospel-Centered churches must intentionally tie the doing to the being. That is, all our doing in the Christian life flows from the definitive “done” that was Christ’s work on the cross (John 19:30).
