The fact that, in the past, you could more reasonably expect to force a leader to resign by bringing out some personal/legal skeletons in their closet is pretty interesting and strange in retrospect.
I'm not sure what exactly explains the trend.
I think he's right in this instance, but not in a "Oh, the decay of our leadership!" way, but actually the opposite way round: in a "Yeah, why *did* Nixon and many other leaders resign when faced with such scandals, in retrospect?"
If Trump was credibly accused of the exact same thing as Bill Clinton, the idea that it would even remain news for a single week would be laughable, and the idea of Trump *resigning* for it would just be downright bizarre.
What is the current disposition of the IRGC and the civilian government? Are they united, or somewhat at odds? What does Khamenei think of all this?
And even more unknown unknowns.
This, plus Israel's insistence of staying in Lebanon, plus the fact that Oman is letting ships through their sea territory without a toll, are some major indicators that the war was left unfinished.
Though, it's not impossible that Iran will settle for less than they demanded.
Ghalibaf smacks down Trump's fantastical nonsense with his customary savoir faire.
I give this public "MoU" debate another day or two before it collapses from its incoherence.
The Americans can't accept the terms as written.
The Iranians won't accept them redefined.
More war.
There's a ton we just don't know, like: how will Russia and China react to Iran returning to a war footing and reblocking Hormuz? Can the Oman Hormuz problem be determined diplomatically/militarily, or will Iran just have to give up the idea of a toll system?
America falsely claims our unfrozen assets will buy their agriculture. Interesting. The only crop we're harvesting is what you planted: decades of mistrust. It's organic, abundant, and homegrown. But apparently the US only exports GMO soybeans, broken promises and trash talks.
@NiaFrome Ah, I see, okay
I guess I was operating with a more impulsive definition of desire, where the sudden urge of "I want to eat food" arrives before the mind can consciously articulate "I want to eat food *because* I am hungry/sad/bored/etc", each of which does imply a future goal
@RodericDay There's discussion in some circles about if children's media should be taken as seriously as adult media.
To me, that question is much less interesting than the question of "Why do children's and adult's stories have their stereotypical themes in the first place? Cui bono?"
@RodericDay It's telling that many of the closest analogues of these kinds of stories are safely dumped into children's media - "power of teamwork/friendship" etc, with the implication that in the real, adult world, you cannot trust anybody (and, therefore, solidarity is suspect and naive).
Israeli enemy just targeted a car near Ali Taher hill, by a drone strike, eastern Nabtieh.
2 martyrs.
This is a new violation of ceasefire.
The resistance has the right to respond.
@RodericDay I'm reminded of Xi's contemplations of water drilling through rock
if you have a goal in mind, and you have the choice to either move very slowly and carefully through pores and fractures, or slam ineffectually into hard rock, then I'd always recommend the former
@RodericDay cultures of martyrdom only make sense in situations where death is already a strong, unavoidable likelihood
otherwise, it's a permanent waste of very valuable resources
This thread is insane to me.
Ineffectual activism ruined the lives of (afaict) brave and politically conscious people.
And the replies are like,
"What did you expect? In fact, everyone should get used to more pointless martyrdom and sacrifice, and reject self-preservation."
@RodericDay "Landlords take half my paycheck and don't even do any work at all!"
you're gonna wanna sit down for this one. see, there's a factory owner over there, and there's this concept called "surplus value"...
Classic Lenin ripping into Hudson and pals from the grave.
There's probably nothing more ideologically dangerous for the budding Marxism of the West today than incessant chatter that "financialized capitalism" (evil) is corrupting "industrial capitalism" (wholesome).
Empirically, the results are in:
- nukes or missile cities are required to survive/deter military pressure
- if you can't get either, best shot is to endure sanctions and hope you aren't noticed
- if you get noticed and sieged, only remaining hope is to become dengist
